Human Population

The human population has surpassed seven billion and continues to grow exponentially. Even optimistic projections have us hitting 8 billion before 2040, although realistic numbers may be much higher. Already, more than a billion people are not getting their basic needs met and an increasing population puts more pressure on already stressed resources. The increase in global average standard of living and therefore consumption levels have had the largest impact.

Although the average growth rate has slowed, in many minority countries it is still well above replacement rates. There are multiple factors at work in these scenarios, but possibly the most effective solution is providing educational and occupational opportunities for women and girls
