UW Oshkosh Endorses the Earth Charter
In spring 2002, UW Oshkosh became one of only eight colleges and universities that as an entire institution (rather than merely a department) have endorsed the Earth Charter. We are also the only institution of higher education in Wisconsin that has endorsed the Earth Charter.
The Earth Charter is an international document that calls for us to promote ecological integrity, social justice, democracy, and peace. UW Oshkosh is one of the few universities in the country to formally endorse the Earth Charter.
The Earth Charter endorsement statement reads:
"We, the undersigned, endorse the Earth Charter. We embrace the spirit and aims of the document. We pledge to join the global partnership for a just, sustainable, and peaceful world and to work for the realization of the values and principles of the Earth Charter. We pledge to join the Global Partnership in Support of the Earth Charter Initiative for a sustainable way of life and urge all governments to endorse the Earth Charter."
The Four Principles of the Earth Charter are:
1. Respect and Care for the Community of Life
2. Ecological Integrity
3. Social and Economic Justice
4. Democracy, Nonviolence, and Peace
