Special Education-100 Remediating Specific Language Handicaps in Reading and Spelling. (3 credits) Systematic drill and phonemes, affixes, and roots is used to develop the ability to read and therefore, comprehend college-level textbooks and materials. Similar drill is employed to teach spelling. In addition, syllabication for both reading and spelling purposes is also taught. This course also offers direct instruction to remediate the writing skills deficits by providing the participant with a variety of methods and applications aimed at increasing the participants' knowledge and skill with the intent that participants will apply these skills to passing English 101. Students also learn study skills such as notetaking and reading texts for comprehension through integration of activities in this course with the required 3 credit Understanding the Arts course. This course does not count toward the 120 credits necessary for graduation.

 Understanding the Arts. (3 credits) Providing students with an educational opportunity that increases their understanding and appreciation of the visual arts. Counts towards graduation credits and meets a humanities general education requirement.

Special Topics Areas

Transition Issues. In addition to the courses listed above, students attend a"transition issues" course. The course content covers career development issues including helping students research careers and select a major; study skills including time management, notetaking and reading textbooks effectively and a variety of adjustment to college life topics, including living with a roommate and campus safety.
