Contradictions of Fair Hope
Description
The Fair Hope Benevolent Society was society formed by newly freed slaves to respond to hunger, illness, and the fear of a pauper's grave. What started as a group dedicated to helping each other became a large yearly celebration of their religion and family, and then transformed into a yearly festival of prostitution, dugs, and guns. Contradictions of Fair Hope examines the societies origins and the transformations that led to what it is today.
