Taiwan. Standing on Shaky Ground
Description
Taiwan is heavily industrialized economy dependent on nuclear power. On the mainland, concern is growing about the threat posed by reactors on shaky ground. And because of its disputed nationhood, Taiwan cannot ship its waste for offshore processing. 30 years ago, Tao residents on Orchid Island were told that the island was the chosen location for a fish cannery, they received a nuclear waste facility. ABC correspondent Mark Willacy examines the nuclear industry of Taiwan, drawing several parallels with Japan, and investigates Tao concerns that with a disintegrating nuclear waste dump, Orchid Island will suffer a Fukushima-style disaster.
