Of Beauty and Deities. Music and Dance of India
Description
With wonderful performances by the troupe "Kalanjali: Dances of India," this program introduces classical Indian dance and music, featuring a kirtanam dance honoring Lord Krishna, and other "bharata natyam" pieces, a temple dance style described in a 2,000-year-old Sanskrit treatise on the performing arts. Viewers learn the symbolic significance of these dances, while discussions with the accompanists provide a glimpse into Indian music's ragas and talas. Host Eve A. Ma also talks with the performers about the continuance of cultural traditions from antiquity to the time of the British Raj, when temple dances were banned, and through to the American diaspora. The video concludes with a folk dance from Orissa.
