Dance Therapy and Authentic Movement. Looking for Me
Description
A leading proponent of the discipline known as authentic movement and the founder and director of the first school devoted to its study (The Mary Starks Whitehouse Institute), Dr. Janet Adler has taught extensively in both the U.S. and Europe. Her appearances in film and media have also been crucial to raising awareness of the power of dance therapy. This documentation of Dr. Adler's work has been celebrated for vividly capturing a series of sessions between Janet and two autistic girls, ages two and five. As she mirrors their gestures the children gradually develop trust in her, shifting out of their profound isolation. With time they accept a degree of reciprocity and intimacy which firsthand observers of the process may not have believed possible.
