The Big Bloom
Description
In this program the Tara takes on a new group of researchers in Abu Dhabi, then sets sail for the Indian Ocean-home to at least a third of the world's oil reserves-to search for algal blooms. Describing how algae is transformed into petroleum, the team stresses the importance of understanding this ecosystem and its role in regulating greenhouse gases. With the help of satellite imagery, a promising patch of blooms is located off Oman, but the Tara must change course after local authorities deny the scientists permission to take samples. Viewers witness the challenges of conducting research, from testing a vast array of instruments to maneuvering national borders.
