Delivery

Description

When the cervix dilates to 4 inches (10 cm), the pushing and delivery phase of childbirth begins. During this phase the baby starts the journey down the birth canal. The head rotates and becomes distorted during a slow descent down the narrow opening. The baby's skull bones have gaps, called fontanelles, which allow the head to elongate and fit within the birth canal. Now the woman's breathing exercises and her partner's training as a birth coach become important. The partner encourages the mother and helps the doctors and nurses tell her when to push. When the couple see their child, they realize that the pain and waiting were worth the effort.
