Lymph Nodes
Description
Lymph nodes work like a biological filtering system. Afferent (going toward) lymph vessels bring unfiltered fluids into the lymph nodes to be filtered. Efferent (going away from) lymph vessels carry the cleaned fluids to the cardiovascular system to become part of the blood plasma. When foreign organisms invade your body, the trapped microorganisms inside lymph cells or nodes can cause painful swellings in your neck, armpits, groin, or tonsils. When the phagocytic cells that line the lymph node walls destroy these organisms, the swelling and pain subside.
