Transformations
Description
The Texas Titan roller coaster hurtles riders along at a speed of 90 mph, 255 feet up in the air. And like all objects that move, its cars undergo a series of mathematical changes as they shift position. This program explores transformations, the principles that underlie the movement of a shape from one place to another. Three-dimensional transformations are made clear using containers on cargo ships as an example-the containers are efficiently stacked and unloaded by an automated system based on 3-D geometry. In addition, rotations, reflections, and symmetry are illustrated by Hawaii's Gemini Observatory as its telescope revolves to study the night sky.
