Born to a wheelright and community leader, Haydn grew up with the folk culture and song presented to him by his parents. His talented was recognized early, and the film follows young Haydn to St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, where he struggled as a choirboy. It took some time for the musical nobility to take notice of Haydn, but he eventually gained a reputation as a teacher and conductor, and was finally given a post at court by Prince Esterhazy.
