SlamNation. The Sport of Spoken Word-Educator's Edition
Description
Is it a verbal slugfest that debases poetry or a vibrant echo of Homer and the drama competitions of ancient Athens? Is it all about winning or is it an inclusive grassroots art movement? No matter how you define it, one thing is clear: slam poetry draws a crowd. This program spotlights movers and shakers in the slam community as they compete in the seventh annual National Poetry Slam in Portland, Oregon. On-stage footage captures the manic energy and wordplay required of all slam poets as well as the elimination-round system that culminates in a cash prize and championship trophy. Meanwhile, behind-the-scenes interviews with performers Saul Williams, Jessica Care Moore, Taylor Mali, and others help to illustrate participant goals, attitudes, and processes. Marc Smith, inventor of slam poetry, introduces the film. This classroom-friendly version is shortened to less than an hour and contains no profanity or sexual content.
