Allied Forces and Japanese Forces Fight at the Battle of the Coral Sea ca. 1942
Description
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, Japan became more aggressive throughout the South Pacific. In an attempt to invade Australia, the Japanese navy entered the Coral Sea in early 1942. The Allies, however, won a decisive victory over the Japanese in the Coral Sea, damaging two of Japan's most important aircraft carriers. Naval air battles were characteristic of the Pacific theater of World War II, and the loss of the two carriers was enough to halt Japan's southward advance.
