Charles Van Doren Admits Cheating on Quiz Show ca. 1959
Description
National interest in televised quiz shows peaked in 1957 when Charles Van Doren, an attractive, well-spoken Columbia University Ph.D. student, won $129,000 over 14 weeks on the show Twenty-One. Van Doren went on to host an NBC television show and teach at Columbia. In August 1958 allegations surfaced that producers rigged Twenty-One and other game shows by feeding popular contestants answers and coaching their behavior. Van Doren initially denied the allegations, but later, before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Legislative Oversight, admitted that producers had given him answers to questions that would be asked in future shows.
