Independence Leads to the Congo Crisis ca. 1960
Description
The Congo Crisis of 1960 followed Belgium's grant of independence to its former colony, which became known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The failure of United Nations (UN) peacekeepers to restore order to the country led Congolese prime minister Patrice Lumumba to seek assistance from the Soviet Union, which inflamed cold war tensions with the United States.
