At first, President Woodrow Wilson refused to support suffrage for women. However, a steady barrage of protest directed by Alice Paul and the National Woman's Party forced Wilson to change his mind, and in 1918, he urged Congress to pass the Nineteenth Amendment. Copyright The WPA Film Library.
