President John F. Kennedy Orders Naval Quarantine of Cuba During the Cuban Missile Crisis ca. 1962
Description
The United States and the Soviet Union came to the brink of war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, during which time the United States demanded that the Soviet Union remove nuclear missiles positioned in Cuba that were capable of striking American cities. On October 22, President John F. Kennedy announced that U.S. warships would begin a naval "quarantine" of Cuba, and turn back any ships that were found to be carrying weapons. The administration chose to label the measure a "quarantine" rather than a blockade because the latter was considered an act of war.
