On April 4th, 1968, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee. As news of his assassination spread, American cities were engulfed in chaos and fear. Urban areas erupted in riots and fires burned out of control. Dozens of people were killed. Meanwhile, presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was in Indianapolis, where he was scheduled to make a campaign appearance in an African-American neighborhood. Kennedy wanted to deliver the news to the people. But local police warned him, they won't be able to provide protection if the people rioted. Kennedy wrote out some brief notes and then courageously gave a moving plea for peace and reconciliation on the back of a truck. It would eventually be regarded as one of the great political speeches of the twentieth century.
