Maruja Mallo. A Fondo—In Their Own Words
Description
Maruja Mallo (1909-1995) is a unique figure in the landscape of Spanish painting of the 27th generation: "then we did not dream of the transcendence of Dalí, of Buñuel, nor of Federico." At the age of 18, Ortega y Gasset sponsors her first exhibition in Madrid, with paintings by Verbenas. In 1933 she exhibited in Paris, where she bought works by Eluard and Breton. With an exuberant charisma and vitality, she meets a multitude of artists and intellectuals, both in Madrid, "Madrid then was Europe", also in Paris and later in Chile, Argentina and the United States: "there are so many names that sometimes the brain does not have space to remember them. In this program of A FONDO, it is also remembered the phrase about her by Gómez de la Serna: "She is the only young witch I have ever met." As a farewell she poses her aesthetic future: "After having mastered the Euclidean geometry I go to the Eisenstenian geometry".
