Internal Migration in China

Description

Since the 1970s, China has been experiencing the world's largest internal migration. In this program, we look at what internal migration is and why China is experiencing a dramatic population shift from rural to urban centers. Population statistics and graphs are provided to help students understand the significance of this event. The hukou system of household registration, criticized for creating wide ranging social injustices and a ‘floating population' of migrants, is investigated. Woven throughout the video is the fictional account of the challenges farmer Huang Li faces as he moves to the city to improve economic opportunities for himself and his family.
