Landscape of Belief
Description
The Celtic landscape is rich in megaliths, many of them-like the standing stones of the Scottish Islands or the passage tombs like Gaurinis in Brittany or Newgrange in Oreland-taken over by Celts and dedicated to the Celtic pantheon. Dolmens, too, were taken over by the Celts, who gave the prehistoric stone tables new meaning in the stories of Diarmuid and Grainne and Tristan and Iseult. The Christian Celts carved their beliefs on the Celtic Crosses and Calvaries of Brittany; there is no mystery in what they depict, unlike the Stone Age monuments, whose meaning is lost.
