Ivy Krull examines vulnerable populations, such as homeless and LBGTQ populations, and the disparities in their access to addictions treatment services. She looks at why disparities exist and how social workers can help in closing the gap. In the clinical demonstration, Luz Marilis Lopez works with Monica who has been in and out of treatment centers for cocaine, meth, and heroin abuse. Monica has suffered from family trauma and witnessed her father being deported back to Mexico when she was a small child. She was kicked out of her home as a teenager and was on the streets for a period of time. As a bonus feature to this video, Lena Lundgren interviews a mother whose 24-year old son is currently addicted to heroin. The son's addiction started with opioid pain medication and quickly moved into smoking and finally injecting heroin. He has been in and out of treatment centers and has experienced multiple relapses. Ivy Krull is Associate Director for the Center for Addictions Research & Services at Boston University's School of Social Work. Her research focuses on vulnerable populations, addiction, depression screening, and health behavior change. Lena Lundgren is Professor of Social Welfare Policy as well as Director for the Center for Addictions Research & Services at Boston University's School of Social Work. Dr. Lundgren's research focuses on examining the relationships between drug use-HIV and substance abuse treatment utilization. Luz Marilis Lopez is Clinical Associate Professor of Clinical Practice at Boston University's School of Social Work. Dr. Lopez's clinical work focuses on focuses on evidenced-based intervention for people dealing with trauma and addiction recovery.
