Time to remember. Crime & prohibition. Episode 9
Description
A unique exploration of the dramatic social, political and cultural transformation of the Western world during the first half of the 20th century, bringing the period vibrantly to life for 21st century viewers through the exclusive use of British Pathé's evocative newsreel footage. Time to Remember captures the iconic and pivotal moments - as well as new and passing social trends - from 1896 through to 1945. Updated from the landmark 1960s series of the same name, these themed episodes feature the original narrative from celebrated actors Sir Michael Redgrave, Sir Ralph Richardson, Joyce Grenfell and Sir Anthony Quayle. In this episode, Newsreel footage and voiceover from the original 1950s Time to Remember documentary TV series tells the story of the media circus that surrounded notorious gangsters and other Depression-era criminals in the United States of America. This is encapsulated in the kidnapping of Charles and Anne Lindbergh's baby - the 'crime of the century'. Includes footage of rumrunners trying to outrun the US Coastguard and beat prohibition; mobster Jack 'Legs' Diamond; John Dillinger behind bars; Al Capone at the racecourse; and coverage from inside the courtroom during the Lindbergh baby murder trial of German illegal immigrant Bruno Richard Hauptmann.
