60 minutes. Who poisoned the children?
Description
A pharmacist in Haiti used barrels of what he thought was pharmaceutical glycerine to sweeten medicine for children. It turned out to be diethylene glycol instead, and in 1996 children began to die from taking the tainted medicine. The barrels were traced to Europe, and then to China. The FDA was asked to follow up with China, but had no authority to get answers. The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act came about in the United States because of a similar problem in the 1930s. Mike Wallace reports.
