Lifting of the Makutu
Description
In 1963 June Miru, a young Maori woman lost her first child within hours of its birth. Twenty-five years later when three of her daughters each lost a son the same way, her father told her it was a Makutu (curse). This documentary features the work of Professor Stephen Robertson, a leading pediatric geneticist, who made international headlines in 2003, with a landmark finding into congenital birth abnormalities after having discovered the gene which causes complex birth defects. The success of his work was made possible because of the help provided by the Miru family in Auckland, who had lost seven baby boys, all born with the same deformities caused by a deadly mutation in the gene.
