In an effort to help facilities provide quality patient care, standards issued by The Joint Commission emphasize cultural competence and sensitivity to issues regarding culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, functional ability and economic situation. Encourage the asking of questions for more complete patient understanding. Stimulate staff to learn how patients display cultural expression.
