Miracle baby grows up

Description

Premature babies--the so-called miracle babies--are babies born half-way through pregnancy. In the largest study ever conducted in the world the EPICure (Extremely Preterm Infants) study looked at all such babies born in Great Britain and Ireland in 1995. Of 4004 babies born, 1211 were born alive. 811 received intensive care and of these 314 survived to go home (1/3 of these on oxygen). The programme looks at what happened to these survivors as they grew up, and their quality of life as a result of being kept alive by medical technology whose long-term effects were unknown. At age 6 of the 241 survivors examined 40% had moderate to severe disabilities as opposed to 2% in a comparable school community. In the light of the results was the medical intervention justified and at what cost and to whom?
