India, turmoils of the century

Description

The Raj, the Indian Empire, more than just a country: a continent. From the violent turmoil of its disintegration were born India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. This episode of 'Making History' begins at the start of the century with the struggle for independence. Using archive footage never seen in the West, it describes the conflicts which are undermining the sub-continent: Kashmir, Punjab, Assam, Sri Lanka's Tamils, religious riots, pogroms and more recently the destruction of the Ayodhya mosque by Hindu extremists. This separatist fever and interreligious violence are sapping the foundations of the 'world's biggest democracy.' The areas most affected and unstable are themselves next to regions already ridden with violence and destabilised by civil war, Afghanistan, Tibet, Central Asia.
