On August 31, 1997, Diana Princess of Wales died after the black Mercedes in which she was a passenger crashed in a four lane underpass at Pont de l'Alma in Paris. When Diana's death was announced, the world was shocked. The United Kingdom was gripped by an unprecedented outpouring of public grief and millions around the world shared the feeling of loss. Diana earned a place in hearts around the world with her compassion for those in pain, suffering and grief. Not only was this a tragic end for the women adored by millions, but the world's collective mourning was a global event like no other. Diana, Princess of Wales, truly was a people's princess, the queen of their hearts.
