Secondary. Aaron's story
Description
Aaron is a 15 year old with ADHD and Oppositional Defiance Disorder, both diagnosed in secondary school. Since Year 7 his behaviour has been challenging. At his school, Turves Green Boys School in Birmingham, 20% of pupils are SEN-registered. The school has a team of learning mentors who counsel pupils and find outside support where needed. They have found many different types of schemes for Aaron over the last five years including an intensive three week behaviour management programme called FLIP - Flexible Learning Individual Pathways - and they have provided another counsellor Aaron sees weekly. Aaron has also gained significantly by taking part in Skill Force, a nationwide initiative that provides inspirational and motivational activities to around 8,000 14-16 year olds a year. Aaron's behaviour has improved significantly thanks to all this support and the strong relationship that has evolved between Aaron's mother and the teaching staff.
