European parliament
Description
A group of 14-to-16-year-olds from three schools in Kent spends a few days in Strasbourg. The first day is spent sightseeing and absorbing local culture. The main aim, however, is to participate in a Euroscholar Day at the European Parliament, joining 500 fellow pupils from schools throughout Europe. The students learn more about the workings of the EU from officials, and then act as MEPs for the day, debating and voting on topical issues. In doing so, they discover that language is not necessarily a barrier to communication. The Euroscholar programme is open to applications from any school with students aged between 14 and 18 years, and provides a small subsidy for travel.
