How one Secondary school has made a national impact with a twin approach to the environment: promoting sustainability and encouraging bio-diversity.Dorothy Stringer School in Brighton has both a sustainability coordinator and a bio-diversity coordinator. Together they've overseen a major environmental project to turn a derelict building into an eco-centre surrounded by managed woodland. The wood, which also has a large pond, provides locations for lessons on bio-diversity. The school has also contoured a stretch of chalk grassland to make a butterfly haven linked to the national Big Butterfly Count. The eco-centre, lit by a sun pipe and heated by solar power, provides opportunities for experiments on insulation. The whole school has gone green from textile classes creating fashions from recycled material to art students painting a huge mural to celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity.
