Private life v public role
Description
Sex, lies and lesson plans. Using an imaginary case study, moderator Mike Baker asks the What If panel whether teachers and others who work with children should be required to have exemplary moral standards. In their personal lives should they set an example to their pupils over matters such as sexual fidelity and is a teacher entitled to a murky past so long as it does not impinge on her current teaching? The panel, which includes two secondary heads, a primary head, a governor and a union official, wrestles with dilemmas posed by a teacher whose excellence in the classroom is not marred by the lack of judgement she shows in her private life. Should the school managers intervene when her partner's behaviour spirals out of control or is it none of their business?
