Making a statement
Description
Many teachers say they don't know enough about the process of gaining a statement of educational need. This programme, together with the accompanying web materials provides insights into the way it works through the eyes of two families. The parents of Hayden and Naftali each describe their struggle to gain a statement for their child. Louise, Haydon's mother, has been successful in gaining his statement, while Naftali's parents, Danielle and Jonny are mid process. It hasn't been an easy journey for either family and while Louise faces possible future battles to ensure compliance with the statement, Danielle and Jonny are determined to achieve a positive outcome for their son. Expert in the field, Dr Susanna Pinkus, offers an overview of the process. The programme reveals the personal and emotional investment that parents make in the course of the process and shows how valuable the support of teachers and school can be.
