Finding time
Description
Music teacher Paul Moses has a Year 5 class with a wide ability range consisting of a group of very able boys, and another group of children who require considerable additional input. He worries about differentiation and how best to allocate his time. He is also torn between talking from the front and allowing the children to work in groups. Consultant John Bayley joins him in Christ Church School in south London. Bayley helps Moses appreciate the different learning approaches of both groups - how the more able need to be challenged while the less able need space and time to build their confidence. Bayley advises a more effective allocation of time so that Paul doesn't feel so continually rushed. The programme provides an excellent insight into the challenges presented by children of varying abilities, and offers some useful techniques for teachers in a similar situation.
