Mike Tomlinson
Description
Sir Mike Tomlinson seems to enjoy difficult challenges, succeeding Chris Woodhead as Chief Inspector of Schools, sorting out the 2002 exams fiasco and leading the inquiry into the education of 14-19 year olds, which became the Tomlinson Report. In a frank discussion with Ted Wragg, he argues that we have one of the most over-examined systems in the world: I just want a sensible balance between external examinations and the professional judgement of our teachers. But government response to his report was disappointing: Unless we have an education system which enables all young people's talents and abilities to be identified, nurtured and recognised, then we will pay a price.
