Effective questioning
Description
Effective Questioning is the follow-up programme to Formative Assessment . It provides a unique opportunity to hear why Professor Paul Black and Christine Harrison, authors of the influential pamphlet Working Inside the Black Box , regard questioning as an essential part of successful formative assessment technique. They identify effective questions and discussion as key to good teaching and learning. At Lord Williams School, Oxfordshire, teacher Jon Ryder uses open questioning to provoke discussion amongst his Year 11 science class and Karen Vear employs wait time as a strategy to motivate all her pupils to take part in her maths lesson. At Bishop Hatfield School, Alf Wood encourages pupils in his history lesson to generate their own questions as a way of involving them in their own learning, and his colleague Carol Wilding uses white boards to provide all pupils with an opportunity to participate in the lesson.
