Teacher's guide to Islam
Description
This programme explores the elements of Islamic faith that any primary teacher should know by spending 48 hours in the company of the Sheikh family from Birmingham. The family as they celebrate Eid Ul Fitr, the festival that marks the end of Ramadan, the annual holy month that unites all Muslims in fasting, feasting, worship and prayer. The Sheikh family guide us through some of the rituals and daily routines associated with these principles, such as answering the call to prayer, gift-giving and Quran lessons.Imran Mogra, RE lecturer at the University of Central England in Birmingham, explains that Islam is a way of life. He suggests that primary teachers should begin by finding what their children know already about being a Muslim, then use everyday practices like prayer and special festivals to help children to understand Islam. Using the agreed syllabus as a framework to plan lessons, teachers can then develop a knowledge and understanding of the religion.
