Sanction and support
Description
In surveys amongst staff at Huntington school in York the biggest cause of stress was homework. However, since the head teacher's recent overhaul of the homework policy and the introduction of a new system combining sanctions for non-completion and support for pupils homework, completion rates have been transformed and teacher stress reduced. The new system is based on strictly enforcing a clear set of rules. For example, if a pupil fails to complete homework more than 4 times within a two-week period, a letter of warning is sent home. If this behaviour continues, the pupil faces 2 weeks of sanctions. This programme looks at how this approach works and what parents and pupils think of it.
