The Taliban legacy
Description
This film brings to light the havoc created by the Taliban regime in Afghanistan where two million Afghans have fled their country, taking refuge in Pakistan. It shows the suffering of the people under Taliban rule, especially the Taliban s brutality towards their political opponents, their harsh treatment of women and their destruction of the ancient Buddha statues, actions condemned by the entire world. Included is a brief account of the war leading to the Taliban victory over the weak Islamic Republic. Of the two million Afghans now in Pakistan, one million live in refugee camps and another million are dispersed throughout that country. Representatives of the United Nations have been trying to improve the inhumane conditions in these camps but even U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan was forbidden from inspecting one of them as the situation is so bleak. Pakistan has refused to ameliorate the situation, insisting the refugees return to Afghanistan. Chaos has erupted on the border as hundreds of desperate Afghans try to cross the border every day.
