Labor Unions have been under attack, largely by Republican administrations and policies, and the attitude of big business is less and less caring and humanitarian. In the face of job loss or massive wage cuts, one union fought back. But between such unequal bargaining partners, the union workers’ only power was in their willingness to stand together and persevere. This film follows one incident where a union group fought back against unfair treatment – and ultimately lost the battle. But the struggle goes on to have a life where hard work is fairly rewarded and families can keep up with the rising cost of living – let alone get ahead and prosper. Barbara Kopple has somehow managed to capture an intimate portrait of the people involved in this incident. Her film takes us into the meetings, the conversations, and the interviews of the characters involved. We get an understanding of the dynamics and strategies, the positions and attitudes of both sides and the personal conflicts and pressures that face workers who seek to take a stand against employer give backs and job cuts. It is not a pretty picture or one with a rosy ending. Hopes and dreams get crushed; desperation, despair, and disunity challenge the union workers despite their efforts to stand together. Without commentary, the film simply observes and records the history.","stream","[]","['Minnesota', 'United States']","['Geo. A. In the sense of its temperature. It was by no means cool, man. After World War II, there were basically two big geopolitical powers left to divide up the world. And divide they did. The United States and the Soviet Union divvied up Europe in the aftermath of the war, and then proceeded to spend the next 45 years fighting over the rest of the world. It was the great ideological struggle, with the US on the side of capitalism and profit, and the USSR pushing Communism, so-called. While both sides presented themselves as the good guy in this situation, the reality is that there are no good guys. Both parties to the Cold War engaged in forcible regime changes, built up vast nuclear arsenals, and basically got up to dirty tricks. Using incredible videography, photos, animation and graphics, this information-packed video introduces students to biological vectors. Viewers will learn that biological vectors carry and transmit disease that affect plants, animals and humans. The program explores various types of diseases spread by vectors including, Zika, Lyme Disease, Malaria, Dengue and Yellow Fever. The video vividly demonstrates how a mosquito sucks blood from a human and then explains how a pathogen is transmitted. Students will learn how scientists who study insects and infectious diseases can use the information they gather to help control and prevent the transmission of vector-borne diseases around the world. By viewing this video, discussing the concepts that are presented, and participating in the accompanying activities, students will be able to: \xCC\xE0 Learn that biological vectors are animals that carry and transmit disease, \xCC\xE0 Name the types of animals that can become vectors, \xCC\xE0 Understand how a mosquito transmits disease \xCC\xE0 Recognize that scientists develop ways to prevent and control the spread of vector-borne diseases, \xCC\xE0 Understand the natural history of vectors \xCC\xE0 Realize that mosquitoes are the most dangerous animal on the planet.","stream","[]","[]","['Vector-pathogen relationships', 'Science', 'Biology']","['Instructional films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1010581xxx/1010581703/1010581703-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4721259" "asp99265685600971","","Science video vocab.
