The film profiles four young women, ages 14 to 22, as they battle the heart-break and confusion of growing up in a culture that romanticizes alcohol. With the eye of a reporter, the curiosity of an anthropologist, and the wounded heart of a teenager, award-winning filmmaker Janet McIntyre embeds herself in these girls' lives, launching a five-year mission to bring their stories to light. From high school classrooms to underground college parties, from roller derby rinks to erotic bakeries, the filmmaker explores the vibrant, dynamic, and scary life of a 21st century girl. This full-length version contains strong language and adult scenarios that may not be suitable for all audiences.","stream","[]","[]","['Drinking of alcoholic beverages', 'Girls', 'Binge drinking', 'Women']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006349xxx/1006349280/1006349280-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;2543710" "asp2543436-ctv3","","Expressive arts with adolescents","2014","101 min","['Counseling and therapy in video, volume 3']","This film provides an accessible and practical overview of four major expressive art therapy disciplines--sand, music, play, and art--for clinicians to utilize with adolescents in psychotherapy, as well as the step-by-step process to competently incorporate expressive art interventions with adolescents into clinical practice. The first part of the film highlights four central expressive arts therapies --art or drawings, play therapy, sandplay, and music--including their definitions, research support, & step-by-step instructions for implementation. Next, the film covers the importance of clinicians seeking additional training and credentialing in the specific expressive art therapy areas as well as importance of ethical adherence and competence when integrating various expressive media into play-based psychotherapy with teenagers. The second half of the film contains several clinical sessions with MacKenzie and Angel, both adolescents, who are engaged in various expressive art interventions. In the sessions, Dr. Green demonstrates the importance for a warm therapeutic relationship, self-expression, developmentally-appropriate symbolic communication, and imaginative freedom. In the last section, Dr. Green addresses cross-disciplinary core-competency issues for those clinicians wanting to specialize in one or more of the expressive arts.","stream","[]","[]","['Play therapy', 'Music therapy for teenagers', 'Art therapy for teenagers']","['Instructional films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006529xxx/1006529261/1006529261-disc001-file001-frame00760-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CTIV;2543436" "asp2543388-flon","","The whole gritty city","2013","89 min","[]","The Whole Gritty City is a 90-minute documentary that plunges viewers into the world of three New Orleans school marching bands. This New Orleans marching band story is at the same time a unique portrayal of an American inner city. Yet even though he was driven by rational thinking, experiments and observation, the man who laid the foundations of modern science had a darker side.He was both hermit and tyrant, driven by an obsession to go beyond what we now call science to delve into the occult. This compelling biography sets out to discover what made Newton tick; it reveals his hot-headedness and his ego, as well as his deeply-held religion and his illegal practice of alchemy. Drawing on rarely seen documents, interviews with leading scientists and dramatisations of Newton and his contemporaries speaking in their own words, we get to grips with the real man behind the myth, the magician behind the scientist and bring to life the true genius himself.","stream","['Newton, Isaac']","[]","['Physics', 'Physicists']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005947xxx/1005947857/1005947857-disc001-file001-frame00190-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?VAST;2543290" "asp2543286-vast","","Horizon. Anything smaller is simply invisible, at least to the naked eye. But what if we could see this hidden world all around us in greater detail and magnification than ever before? How different would our familiar surroundings then seem? In Off the Scale, Richard Hammond explores the astonishing miniature universe all around us, revealing that small is not only beautiful, it can also be very, very powerful. From seeing the microscopic changes to ice crystals that can trigger an avalanche to watching in horror the invisible aftermath of a sneeze on a commuter train and learning how the surface of an ordinary-looking plant hides an astounding secret that will make walking on the moon safer, Richard harnesses cutting-edge technologies to transport the viewer into a spectacular micro realm.","stream","[]","[]","['Microphotography']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005947xxx/1005947855/1005947855-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?VAST;2543182" "asp2543174-vast","","Invisible worlds. From death-defying aerial repairmen in the United States using ultraviolet cameras to seek out an invisible force that lurks unseen on power lines, to German scientists unlocking the secrets of animal locomotion with the world's most powerful moving x-ray camera, to infrared cameras that can finally reveal the secrets within a humble beehive, he shows how new technologies are letting us see our world anew.","stream","[]","[]","['Light', 'Natural history']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005947xxx/1005947854/1005947854-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?VAST;2543174" "asp2543157-marc","","Invisible worlds. Trauma changes the way the brain processes information and how the human organism engages with the world. Because of biological systems that are altered in a use-dependent manner traumatized people continue to react in a myriad of ways to current experience as a replay of the past. We will explore the neurobiology of self-regulation and examine ways of befriending one's body, both of which are essential for the integration of traumatic memories: sensations, action patterns and physical sensations derived from the past. Most experience is automatically processed on subcortical i.e. ""unconscious"" levels in the brain; therefore, insight and understanding have only a limited influence on people's control over these processes. We will explore our clinical experiences and research with EMDR, yoga, theater work, and neurofeedback and present the efficacy these various techniques to help people overcome a traumatic past and regain the capacity to be fully alive in the present.","stream","[]","[]","['Counseling psychology', 'Traumatic incident reduction', 'Post-traumatic stress disorder']","['Instructional films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006473xxx/1006473083/1006473083-disc001-file001-frame00240-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CJV2;2542891" "asp2542889-cjv2","","The evolution of psychotherapy. When he regained awareness he was afflicted with ""global aphasia""--total loss of language--and could utter only a single syllable: ""mem."" The standard therapies yielded only frustration. Diane soon found, however, that by harnessing their deep knowledge of each other, and her understanding of language and the brain, she could guide Paul back to the world of words. In the process, she learned unexpected lessons about herself, their marriage, the underappreciated art of care-giving, and the brain's ability to heal itself. By necessity, the couples' lives changed dramatically. Journey inside the cell","2012","50 min","[]","There is a battle playing out inside your body right now. It started billions of years ago and it is still being fought in every one of us every minute of every day. It is the story of a viral infection - the battle for the cell. This film reveals the exquisite machinery of the human cell system from within the inner world of the cell itself - from the frenetic membrane surface that acts as a security system for everything passing in and out of the cell, the dynamic highways that transport cargo across the cell and the remarkable turbines that power the whole cellular world to the amazing nucleus housing DNA and the construction of thousands of different proteins all with unique tasks. The virus intends to commandeer this system to one selfish end: to make more viruses. And they will stop at nothing to achieve their goal. Exploring the very latest ideas about the evolution of life on earth and the bio-chemical processes at the heart of every one of us, and revealing a world smaller than it is possible to comprehend, in a story large enough to fill the biggest imaginations. With contributions from Professor Bonnie L Bassler of Princeton University, Dr Nick Lane and Professor Steve Jones of University College London and Cambridge University's Susanna Bidgood.","stream","[]","[]","['Viruses', 'Cytology', 'Cells', 'Cell physiology', 'Genetics']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005988xxx/1005988321/1005988321-disc001-file001-frame00045-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?VAST;2542591" "asp2542575-vast","","Horizon. Life inside the colony","2013","52 min","[]","Ant colonies are one of the wonders of nature - complex, organised and mysterious. This programme reveals the secret, underground world of the ant colony in a way that's never been seen before. At its heart is a massive, full-scale ant nest, specially-designed and built to allow cameras to see its inner workings. The nest is a new home for a million-strong colony of leafcutter ants from Trinidad. For a month, entomologist Dr George McGavin and leafcutter expert Professor Adam Hart capture every aspect of the life of the colony, using time-lapse cameras, microscopes, microphones and radio tracking technology. The ants instantly begin to forage, farm, mine and build. Within weeks, the colony has established everything from nurseries to gardens to graveyards. The programme explores how these tiny insects can achieve such spectacular feats of collective organisation. This unique project reveals the workings of one of the most complex and mysterious societies in the natural world and shows the surprising ways in which ants are helping us solve global problems.","stream","[]","[]","['Ants']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005963xxx/1005963941/1005963941-disc001-file001-frame00070-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?VAST;2542560" "asp2542516-vast","","Nature's miracle babies. Featuring rare footage and interviews from Soo's co-stars and friends, including actors George Takei, Nancy Kwan and Max Gail, comedians Steve Landesberg and Gary Austin, and producer Hal Kanter, the film traces Jack's early beginnings as a nightclub singer and comedian, to his breakthrough role as Sammy Fong in Rogers and Hammerstein's Broadway play and film version of The Flower Drum Song. The film also explores why Soo, a former internee who was actually born Goro Suzuki, was forced to change his name in the post WWII era, in order to perform in clubs in the mid-west. Soo's life experiences and acting resume caused him to speak out against negative ethnic portrayals and even led him to refuse roles that were demeaning to Asian Americans.","stream","['Soo, Jack']","['United States']","['Actors', 'Asian American actors', 'Asian American men in motion pictures', 'Japanese Americans']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006345xxx/1006345419/1006345419-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?VAST;2542127" "asp2542124-ausv","","Marti. The world of Len Lye","2008","19 min","[]","Len Lye (1901-1980) was a pioneer of experimental animation, and also of kinetic sculpture. This short film dramatically presents 18 minutes inside the head of the artist as a teenager. The opening scenes are set in New Zealand in the year 1917, on the day when Lye (setting out on his bicycle to deliver newspapers) makes his excited discovery that motion can be the basis for a radically new approach to art. New Zealand in those days was a remote, conservative little country - a very unlikely place for an avant-garde artist to begin his career. But looking at fast-moving clouds, and suddenly seeing their patterns of movement as a kind of music, starts the young man on the path that would lead to him becoming a highly original film-maker and sculptor. Following this 'Eureka!' moment, a series of other dramatized scenes tracks what he does with the idea - the development of his artistic thinking, in particular his intense focus on the body and what he called 'the Old Brain'. He explores unusual forms of dance. He is drawn to the film medium but troubled by its habit of giving priority to story-telling over movement. Art that Moves ends with a montage sequence showing the ultimate fruits of his idea - his creation of films and kinetic sculptures, both informed by the same highly original sense of motion. These are Lye's ideas in action, with relevance to every film-maker, dancer, or artist who works with movement today.","stream","['Lye, Len']","['New Zealand']","['Experimental films', 'Kinetic sculpture', 'Artists']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006349xxx/1006349166/1006349166-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?AUSV;2542122" "asp2542115-cjv2","","The evolution of psychotherapy. Every year the island of Sumba is the centre of the Pasola, a deadly and ritual battle during which dozens of horsemen fight each other to bring peace and a prosperous harvest for the rest of the year. Sumba has long been associated with violence. For centuries, this island was known for its cannibalism, headhunters and slave trade. Villages would readily wage war against each other. At the dawn of the twentieth century, when peace finally reigned over the island, the Pasola became the only way to settle scores. They are isolated in a hostile environment so they can only depend on themselves, their horses and their neighbors. Under such conditions, the concept of solidarity takes on a whole different meaning. During the summer, they herd the goats to the mountain’s pastures. On average, they achieve 50% better outcomes than their equally trained and credentialed peers. What's more, the best have much lower dropout rates and deliver better and more consistent outcomes across a range of client diagnoses, presenting complaints, and motivational levels. In this workshop, participants will learn three specific strategies that separate the good from the great. Attendees will not only learn a simple method for determining their effectiveness but also how to develop a profile of their most and least effective practices--what works and what doesn't. Workshop 37","","111 min","['Evolution of Psychotherapy']","Is there any doubt that people learn more easily through experience when they're focused and receptive? Or that growth is easier when rigid perceptions and boundaries of experience are softened and redefined? Hypnosis highlights the malleability of subjective experience and empowers people to live their best lives. In the past, hypnosis was considered by many to be the ""crazy cousin nobody wanted at the therapy family picnic."" But, as the contributions of hypnosis in neuroscience (especially neurogenesis and neuroplasticity), epigenetics, clinical effectiveness, and interpersonal dynamics have steadily grown in importance, hypnosis can be identified as a core component of good therapy in whatever form it may be delivered. Understanding the hypnotic foundations of your language and methods can make you a better therapist even if you don't formally practice hypnosis. In this workshop, we will explore some of the key insights about good therapy, including the power of positive expectancy, the importance of multi-level processing of suggestions, the potential for automatic, non-conscious responses, and the encouragement of malleability in perception. Each of the men appear gentle and penitent in their quieter moments. What possesses them to lose control? Psychologists and neuroscientists from Duke University, University of Wisconsin, and University of California, with the help of sophisticated graphics, demonstrate the areas of the brain that become activated in such explosions of temper, such as the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex. Interestingly, the larger the amount of gray matter in the brain, the less prone the person is to acts of violence. The study of the origins of violence impacts on the judicial system as well. How responsible is a person for his or her behavior if their brain or genetic make-up is predisposed to violence? McGuire Gibson, archaeologist at the University of Chicago, had warned the Pentagon to protect the Museum. His was only one voice from the international scholarly community. In the disaster's wake, China's government presented a new face to the world, permitting increased media coverage, accepting international aid, and expressing sympathy for the quake's victims. Was this the beginning of a new openness in China? And what is the future for the people of Sichuan? China’s Earthquake examines these questions through the stories of four survivors.Sichuan TV reporter Zhang Qian finds herself in the middle of the disaster zone, filing her first ever uncensored live reports. China watches transfixed as she interviews Chen Jian, a 26-year-old trucker who had been pinned down by massive concrete slabs for three days. Lin Hao, a nine-year-old, becomes China's hero for rescuing two classmates near the quake's epicenter. Another survivor, Sang Jun, mourns his 11-year-old son who perished when his school became one of the 12,000 that crumbled in the quake. When distraught parents push for investigation, the government appears initially cooperative, but soon retreats behind its former veil of secrecy, demanding media to halt coverage of the story. Devastated citizens are left wondering what happens next, and whether the transparency that emerged following the disaster was simply a fluke.","stream","[]","['China']","['Earthquakes']","['Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1003831xxx/1003831010/1003831010-disc001-file001-frame00030-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;2539224" "asp2539215-marc","","Passion and fury. What is the incredible bond a mother feels for her infant, and how does it relate to the feeling couples may have after a lifetime of living together? Anthropologist Helen Fisher of Rutgers University takes us through the three very different emotions that are often grouped under the word ""love"", namely, lust, romantic love, and attachment. Attachment is what may happen with couples after romantic love has passed, and it enriches their lives. Neuroscientist Charles Nelson explains the role of the prefrontal cortex in the ""uncontrollable"" love typical of teenagers. In Italy, studies are being done on ""love junkies"", those who are addicted to falling in love but unable to make meaningful attachments. Parental love is explored by Richard Davidson, University of Wisconsin. The film shows how different areas of the brain are activated by neurotransmitters to evoke the emotion called love, which gives us the most profound sense of our humanity.","stream","[]","[]","['Love', 'Biology', 'Emotions', 'Human behavior']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1003831xxx/1003831228/1003831228-disc001-file001-frame00155-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;2539215" "asp2539211-marc","","Passion & fury. Since depression is the fastest growing epidemic worldwide, research on the stimulation of positive feelings has momentous possibilities. Dopamine generated in the brain is responsible for making people happy. Rats who have become addicted to dopamine disregard food in their attempt to get more dopamine and may die of starvation for their addiction. Science has shown that monks during meditation have increased levels of dopamine. An advertising executive describes how positive images in ads trigger the brain, stimulating pleasurable feelings and often overriding the rational side of the brain. The connection between food and dopamine is being researched in the Brookhaven National Laboratory obesity studies. Scientists are searching for ways to stimulate the rational side of the brain to suppress the inclination to overeat. Many people say they benefit emotionally and physically from laughter clubs started by the Indian Madan Kataria. Serotonin has proven to be a mood stabilizer, and the sales of pharmaceuticals have burgeoned worldwide since 1988. But many question whether drugs are really the answer to achieving happiness.","stream","[]","[]","['Neuropsychology', 'Happiness', 'Emotions']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1003831xxx/1003831099/1003831099-disc001-file001-frame00030-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;2539211" "asp2531856-clmv","","N-t M-zart","1991","30 min","[]","The Swiss jazz composer Mathias Ruegg, six male members of the Vienna Art Orchestra, six top class female jazz artists, and Austrian director Ernst Grandits explore the fundamental role of the well-known Austrian confection, the Mozartkugel, in life, the universe, Greek mythology and golf!","stream","['Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus']","[]","['Music']","['Filmed performances']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1006024xxx/1006024228/1006024228-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CLMV;2531856" "asp2529878-ativ","","Adler vs. Strasberg.
