The books and documents that carry the records of human civilization are crumbling because the paper on which they are printed is turning to dust. The alum used to prevent ink from bleeding is turning into sulfuric acid, making the paper brittle. The documentary shows us preservation centers where conservationists treat weakened books and introduces us to some of the foremost authorities in the field. It also reviews the various ways of coping with deteriorating paper, such as boxing, filming and strengthening. Turning to Dust raises crucial issues such as how to determine which books to save and how to prevent continued use of acidic paper when alternatives exist. Saving the collective memory of humankind has become a race against time. Preservation is painstakingly slow and trained professionals are scarce. Secret fears","","47 minutes","['Nature of things']","This compassionate look at a wide variety of people who suffer from phobias and anxiety disorders shows the strides being made by different forms of therapy to help conquer these fears. We watch Michelle Krask of UCLA use cognitive behavioral therapy which encourages patients to confront their fear in a supportive environment. One young woman is brought to the edge of a balcony in order to overcome her fear of heights; a claustrophobic man is placed in a confined space; another is exposed to insects that he fears. Repeated exposure with the support of a therapist seems to desensitize people to the object of their irrational fear. Dr. Jerome Kagan demonstrates that infants with a predisposition to these disorders can be identified early on. He contrasts babies who react with anxiety to new stimuli to others who react calmly. Members of the latter group become the more adventurous and social as they grow up. Also covered are obsessive compulsive disorders and post traumatic stress disorder and their treatments. Among the other experts featured are: Dr. David Barlow, Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, Boston; Randy Frost, clinical psychologist, Smith College; and Dr. Michael Otto, Massachusetts General Hospital. It is a complex system with some extraordinary capacity and some unexpected foibles. This Nature of Things production explores many aspects of memory: long and short term memory; hypnosis as a method of recalling the past; the phenomenon of amnesia; the memory of very young children; and the veracity of eye witness testimony. Memory does not work like a videotape recorder. There is the acquisition stage, the retention stage and the retrieval stage. At each stage, memory is subject to influences, but the retention stage is especially vulnerable. Several experts share their findings. We hear from psychologist Alan Baddeley of Cambridge University who has been studying various aspects of 'working memory.' Somewhere in his brain exists a spark of brilliance for musical structures and for rhythm and tone. He plays the piano with vigorous emotion and imitates singers from the past with uncanny clarity.
