Around that time, housewife Marion Stoddart moved to the area with her family, so close to the river they could smell its noxious fumes. At a low point in her life, she decided to fight her own emptiness by taking on the biggest challenge she could find - cleaning up the Nashua. Her dramatic success in mobilizing the community showed people that change was possible, even though they'd lost hope. Marion's efforts helped get the Massachusetts Clean Rivers Act passed so that companies weren't allowed to pollute rivers like the Nashua anymore. In the process, she won a United Nations award, was profiled in National Geographic, and had a widely-read children's book written about her. Her secret? An ordinary person can do extraordinary things when they refuse to give up. Womanhood and circumcision. Part 1","","47 minutes","['Being Maasai Today']","This thought-provoking and much-acclaimed documentary sensitively explores the cultural context of female genital-cutting practices among the Maasai. The film was re-edited with extensive new material and an additional half-hour of extra commentary in 2014. It will stimulate discussion and reflection in a wide variety of courses in cultural anthropology, women's and gender studies, African studies, and development studies. A mother and her two daughters discuss their feelings about circumcision (excision) and its meaning in their lives. The three women discuss their experiences from the perspective of three different stages of the life cycle: Alice, a young woman (enkitok), looks back eleven years to the time when she became a woman. Sikaine, a shy, giggly 14-year-old girl (entito), enjoys the attention of her family and community as she anticipates undergoing the procedure, which she has seen performed on other girls. Tipaya, the mother, is a post-menopausal woman (entasat); she remembers her surgery from several decades back. The film follows Sikaine through all aspects of the process except the surgery itself. She is shaven in preparation for the surgery; neighborhood girls crowd around the window of the room where Sikaine's operation is going on; immediately after the surgery, Sikaine stands and walks to the bed where she smiles proudly as she lies down to rest while the elders sing in her honor. Both Alice and Tipaya offer interesting comparisons of the pain of circumcision and that of childbirth. These engaging women make their perspective on excision comprehensible to western audiences, who are seldom exposed to positive commentary on this practice. The film provides viewers with a new respect for the women who bravely endure this painful surgery. This re-edited version of the film is 50% longer than the original version released in 2002 and it now is authored for DVD by the filmmaker. This version provides a new post-excision interview with Sikaine, deeper discussions of childbirth by both Alice and Tipaya, new translations of the parents' blessing ceremony, and 29 minutes of additional new DVD 'extras' including Alice discussing relations between warriors and girls, rules of respect, women's work, wives and their husband's agemates, giving birth, animal ownership, and the changes in Maasai culture she foresaw.","stream","[]","['Kenya']","['Female circumcision', 'Manners and customs', 'Maasai (African people)']","['Documentary films', 'Nonfiction films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007608xxx/1007608534/1007608534-disc001-file001-frame00135-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3190435" "asp3190433-marc","","To live with herds","","70 minutes","[]","This classic, widely acclaimed film on the Jie of Uganda, produced by the renowned ethnographic filmmaking team of David and Judith MacDougall, examines the effects of nation building in pre-Amin Uganda on the seminomadic, pastoral Jie. Much more than an intrinsically interesting historical document, it has achieved classic status among ethnographic films owing to its remarkable success in developing a coherent analytical statement about its subjects' situation, yet at the same time allowing them to speak for themselves about the world as they see and experience it.The film explores life in a traditional Jie homestead during a harsh dry season. The talk and work of adults go on, but there is also hardship and worry, exacerbated by government policies that seem to attack rather than support the values and economic base of Jie society.A mother counts her children; among them is a son she hardly knows who has joined the educated bureaucracy. Later we find him supervising famine relief for his own people in a situation that seems far beyond his control. At the end of the film Logoth, the protector of the homestead, travels to the west to rejoin his herds in an area of relative plenty; at least for the time being his life seems free from official interference.","stream","[]","['Uganda']","['Ethnology', 'Cattle herders', 'Cattle', 'Jie (African people)']","['Ethnographic films', 'Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007608xxx/1007608533/1007608533-disc001-file001-frame00075-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3190433" "asp3190431-marc","","The pornography of everyday life","","35 minutes","[]","This trenchant and provocative documentary essay will generate thought, analysis, and discussion in a wide variety of courses in women's and gender studies, psychology, sociology, and popular culture. It incorporates more than 200 powerful images from advertising, ancient myth, contemporary art, and popular culture to demonstrate how pornography (defined as the sexualized domination, degradation, and objectification of women and girls and social groups who are put in the demeaned feminine role) is in reality a prevalent mainstream worldview. The film illustrates how the pornographic worldview is a generally accepted discourse, a habitual mode of thinking and acting that underpins not only sexism, but also racism, militarism, physical abuse and torture, and the pillaging of the environment. As such, pornography appears not only in overt, ""hard-core"" forms, but also in virtually every aspect of everyday life. As the film illuminates, even though pornography is generally thought to be the opposite of religion, it actually is an irrational belief system analogous to a religion. Like much patriarchal religious tradition, pornography is shown to be misogynistic and homophobic, and defines sex as ""dirty"" or debased and the opposite of the mind or spirit.Pornography is also shown to support the worst tendencies of patriarchal religions by appropriating previously sacred and potent images of women, sex, goddesses, and the feminine principle, colloquially known as Mother Earth or Mother Nature, and then ritually profaning and defaming them. This works not only to demean women but to justify and legitimize male divinity and worldly authority. The film concludes by suggesting alternatives and by illustrating how visionary thinkers and artists resist the pornographic worldview by re-imagining and restoring respect to eroticism, female sexuality, and the female divine, and by calling for new understandings of sexuality, nature, and society. The Pornography of Everyday Life is a superb and invigorating cultural exploration that will stir thought and engender classroom debate. The Walk Experience","","45 minutes","[]","Once a year in the Cuzco region of Peru, the former center of the Inca empire, some 50,000 pilgrims flock to the highest sanctuary of the world to participate in the largest pilgrimage of the Andean region. The sanctuary of the Senor de Qoyllur Rit'i (Lord of the Shiny Snow) is located nearly 16,000 feet above sea level, at the foot of the Qollqepunku glacier.Traditionally, pilgrims walked from their towns performing their music and dance to visit this miraculous image of Christ on a rock. Today, however, most pilgrims reach the area by truck or bus and only hike uphill the final five miles to reach the sanctuary. The pilgrimage combines longstanding Andean principles and practices and those brought into the tradition by Catholicism. This insightful and beautifully filmed documentary focuses on the comparsas or dance troupes from the community of Pomacanchi, Cuzco, that continue the tradition of walking all the way to the sanctuary, covering 85 miles up and down mountains in three days and two nights, accompanied by the incessant music of flutes and drums. After another two-and-a-half days and two nights at the site, where they perform their ritual dances and participate in an unremitting musical experience, these Quechua-speaking pilgrims return home and leave the site deserted. The film deftly interweaves footage from three separate pilgrimages in which the filmmaker participated to provide a close and detailed depiction of the pilgrims' experiences and explore the importance of the unity of sound, sight, and movement to the construction of meaning and memory to them. Since Quechua-speaking Andeans best learn and remember through the integration of the three, their dance, music, and religious festivals are shown to be central to their social reality. In addition to its remarkable depiction of the long and profound journey to the sanctuary, the film also includes scenes of important activities in the community of Pomacanchi before and after the pilgrimage, as well as remarkable footage of the ceremonial rituals at the sanctuary. Colorful, intense, and absorbing, The Pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Lord of Qoyllur Rit'i will generate thought and discussion in a wide range of classes in Latin American and Andean studies, cultural anthropology, comparative religion, and ethnomusicology, and will be essential for any class studying pilgrimage traditions, religious practices, and indigenous performances in the Americas. The film provides a riveting portrait of a city in often turbulent transition, beginning in 1973 with the election of Mayor Tom Bradley -- the first African-American mayor of a major city without a black majority -- and concluding with the political empowerment of Latinos and the election of Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles's first Latino mayor in more than 130 years.""The New Los Angeles"" looks beyond the Hollywood dreamscape to a dynamic new city, one grappling with the same issues that are becoming commonplace throughout the nation: immigration, globalization, de-industrialization, economic inequality, and a shrinking middle class. The film profiles the efforts of immigrants and the working poor, in coalition with community organizations, labor unions, and elected officials, to transform the environment in which they live and to make the city of Los Angeles accountable to its residents.""The New Los Angeles"" explores the shifting political ground that is shaping the nation's future and proving that the American dream remains a powerful motivator. My Louisiana Love is such a film. This profoundly poignant exploration of environmental injustice and loss focuses a revelatory light on an otherwise invisible American tragedy. My Louisiana Love follows a young Native American woman, Monique Verdin, as she returns to Southeast Louisiana to reunite with her Houma Indian family. Soon, however, she recognizes that her people's traditional way of life - fishing, trapping, and hunting the fragile Mississippi Delta wetlands - is threatened by an unceasing cycle of man-made environmental crises. As Louisiana is devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita and then the massive BP oil leak, Monique finds herself increasingly turning to environmental activism. She documents her family’s struggle to stay close to the land despite the cycle of disasters and the rapidly disappearing coastline. Accompanying Monique, the film examines the complex and unequal relationship between the oil industry and the Delta's indigenous Native American community, revealing in the process how the political and economic policies dictated by the oil industry are wreaking havoc to the Delta environment and the survival of the local indigenous culture. But My Louisiana Love does not derive its power just from the social issues it so clearly examines. Echoing the larger social picture around her, Monique herself must overcome tremendous loss: the destruction of her family home, the death of her father, and the suicide of her partner. By following her calling as a storyteller, Monique draws strength from deep relationships and traditions and redefines the meaning of home. She perseveres and becomes a resilient voice for her unrecognized people. My Louisiana Love is at once a riveting social documentary and an intimate portrait of a complex and memorable individual. Although it is suffused with an almost elegiac poignancy and sense of loss, the film is ultimately an inspiring profile in courage, community, and commitment. This tension is what gives the film its overwhelming impact. My Louisiana Love will motivate student thought and discussion and be an indispensable teaching tool in a wide array of classes in Native American studies, American studies, sociology and social issues, the environment, cultural anthropology, and women's studies. Growing courage toward circumcision. Making Maasai men. 2","","33 minutes","['Being Maasai Today']","One aspect of traditional Maasai culture that remains central to the passage from boyhood to manhood is circumcision. It is a physical and psychological ordeal that Maasai boys look forward to and also dread. This remarkable ethnographic documentary explores the complex meanings of masculinity and Maasai ethnicity, and the place of circumcision and its attendant rituals in their cultural construction. For the Maasai, circumcision is a key public celebration of manhood. The principal events that surround and take place in a Maasai circumcision are shown in detail, including an actual surgery. The surgery itself is remarkably different from that familiar to Western peoples; the cutting is as intricate as the Maasai notion of masculinity.Important commentary is provided by David Kampatae ole Oinyeyie, an unmarried junior elder, who discusses the experiences of Maasai boys that grow their courage until they are ready for the ultimate test of the knife. A Maasai man, he says, must be fearless and always ready to confront danger in whatever form it may present itself. Whether it be the teeth of a leopard or the knife of the circumciser, a Maasai man is ever-ready to face danger without complaint.Proud of his culture and its traditions, David also acknowledges that Maasai life is changing as Western life influences tastes, desires, and practices. The Maasai way of dress, although less desirable in some contexts than Western clothes, is more suited to the environment of the pastoralist way of life, but young Maasai in particular prefer shirts and slacks to shukas. This is the second in a developing series of films (see also Womanhood and Circumcision: Three Maasai Women Have Their Say) on culture change among the Maasai of Kenya at the end of the 20th century. The two films together illustrate the important differences between the contexts of male and female genital-cutting among the Maasai.Boys are altered outside in public, surrounded by dozens of their age mates who taunt and goad them to avoid the disgrace of expressing hesitation or pain. Girls are cut inside their mother's house, in privacy, surrounded by only four women who whisper encouragement. Women initiates stand and walk to the bed where they will rest and heal; men are carried. These differences are iconic of the distinctions that will differentiate Maasai women and men from this point forward in their lives. The films clearly demonstrate how the Maasai divide life into stages that mark the progression from child to elder. While females pass directly from initiate to woman, males must be tested again and again: attaining adult manhood is a complex process that challenges and changes both body and mind. This outstanding documentary will engage students and generate analysis and discussion in a variety of courses in cultural anthropology, African studies, and gender studies. Hurmuti is the eldest wife in an extended family, but she has had a long-term -- and well-known -- affair with another man in the village. The film examines her conflicts with her extended family and with the all-male Islamic Village Council over her own conduct and over her insistence on the right to arrange the marriages of her pre-pubescent daughters. As Hurmuti's fascinating story unfolds it is interwoven with scenes that illustrate the process of growing up female in the village: the play of children; the talk and the duties of adolescent girls; marriage customs; dowry issues; relationships with mothers-in-law; rights to land ownership; and even spirit possessions.Viewers will experience a wide range of emotions, grapple with an array of stimulating questions, and in the end be forced to consider how Hurmuti's life options would have been different if she had been born male. The film is based on ethnographic research carried out in Rajasthan over the past two decades by the producer, Prof. Erin Moore, of the Dept. of Anthropology, Univ. of Southern California. For seven days and seven nights, opposing ancestral lineages take part in a complex ritual courtship competition called the Geerewol. Under the strict control of their elders, elaborately ornamented young men made up with traditional face paint form lines to dance and sing. At the end of each dance, the young women of the opposing lineage come forward to designate the 'most beautiful' male of the group. The ceremony is a ritualization of conflict, which probably replaces ancestral feuds and wars over women from opposing clans, and enables the Wodaabe to break the ceremony in peace after mutually recognizing their cultural uniformity. Each year, organizing the massive gathering becomes more and more difficult, due to the ongoing Sahel ecological crisis and droughts. But according to the Wodaabes, this traditional ceremony is the only opportunity for the nomadic lineages to gather and forge links despite their geographic dispersion. If the ceremony were to be stopped, it would signal to them the end of their society as a unique cultural entity.Fearing that the tradition may die out, Ouba Hassane, 40, and his wife Kedi, 39, chose to appear on screen and relate their experiences and understanding of the ritual. The film follows as Ouba teaches his son about Wodaabe traditions, myths, and religious beliefs. The couple's commentary, along with that of the ceremony participants (dancers, young women, those in charge of the youth, societal elders) provide viewers with deep insight into the full occasion, extending beyond the dance. The Geerewol ritual has been the subject of several films and 'studies' in the West since the 1950s. These have largely fueled a fantasy image of a ceremony in which 'effeminate' men allow women the privilege of choosing male lovers for a night during a male beauty contest. Filmmaker and ethnomusicologist Sandrine Loncke, who spent ten years among the Wodaabe researching and filming, offers a compelling and powerful reframing of the events. She enables the Wodaabe themselves to decipher for us the subtext of the ritual, examining the full spectrum of gender, social, political, educational, and religious beliefs that underscore Wodaabe cultural identity and help ensure their survival.Keenly observed, beautifully filmed, and engagingly edited, the film will richly reward viewing and inspire discussion in a wide range of courses in cultural anthropology, African studies, gender studies, and ethnomusicology. To the Chinese government, tourism is a win-win opportunity to promote rural development and modernization and to encourage urban residents to flex their disposable incomes through domestic travel. To tourists - past, present, and future - it is the epitome of middle-class leisure, proof that the country has moved beyond the hardships of the past and toward a prosperous future. And to those who live in the sites that are visited, tourism is a means to an end, a chance to earn a living by turning one's home into a destination. In the words of Dr. Stevan Harrell, Prof. of Anthropology at the Univ. of Washington, ""This colorful, entertaining, gently ironic documentary presents a vivid and sensitive portrait of a side of China that is little known outside the country: the world of ethnic tourism. In recent years, hundreds of millions of Chinese tourists, mostly city-dwellers, have used their newly increased incomes to travel. And many of the places they visit are ethnic minority villages in China's West and Southwest. They go there for the culture, for the scenery, for the clean air, for something different to see and do.""Peasant Family Happiness depicts the everyday experience of ""doing tourism"" in two rural ethnic tourism villages in contemporary China: Ping'an in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Upper Jidao in Guizhou Province. In these villages, residents negotiate between the day-to-day consequences of tourist arrivals and idealized projections of who they are. Questions of ""authenticity"" are rendered secondary to, yet not entirely subsumed by, market imperatives.Culture and identity remain important for sustaining community, but in ways that reveal just how much labor goes into creating leisure experiences. What really matters to the villagers of Ping'an and Upper Jidao are the bigger, more pressing questions confronting modern rural communities across the globe: the possibilities brought about by improved transport networks, the promises and perils of leaving one's home to be a migrant worker elsewhere, and the pleasures of imagining one's own future through the lens of successful, profitable tourism.Peasant Family Happiness was produced as part of a larger anthropological research project on tourism and rural development in China today. It may also be the most entertaining. It provides extraordinarily honest and riveting portraits of six men who once were women. They are a diverse group: one gave birth to three children; another is a longtime mechanic and body-builder. Each has lived within a body he didn't accept; each has tried to adapt to social expectations he couldn't fulfill; and each has experienced devastating personal pain that could not be obscured by denial. All have embarked upon an enormous and transfiguring struggle to recover their dignity and an identity once denied to them. In candid and riveting interviews, they speak eloquently about a wide array emotional issues, including shame, secrecy, gender identity, depression, intimacy, and the feelings of disempowerment that come from having no role in the decisions made regarding their gender identity. Kristi, 23, recounts the emotional devastation she experienced when she discovered she was in fact ""XY"" after a childhood of being forced to take hormones to grow breasts and develop typical female body characteristics, and after numerous surgeries to create a vaginal cavity. In their commentary, Kristi's parents discuss their good intentions but also their inability to cope with the challenges presented by her situation.Howard, now a Ph.D. in Sexual Psychology, recalls his many surgeries and his profound, near-suicidal feelings of depression while growing up. Dr. Jorge Deboul, a noted pediatrician at Children's Hospital in Oakland, California, provides professional medical perspective on the issues addressed in the film. ""XXXY"" will provoke important classroom discussion of a wide range of vital topics. Is it ethical to operate on the genitals of intersex children before they are old enough to participate in the decisions regarding their gender? Does nature or nurture play a greater role in gender identity? How does society enforce a bipolar gender system? Is gender in fact bipolar or a spectrum of masculinity and femininity? What type of emotional support is available for intersex individuals and their families? Male-female differences in love and marriage","","44 minutes","[]","One of the most important journeys in human life is the quest for a satisfying, enduring love relationship. This search is nearly universal, and a lasting love is the goal of most people in most societies. This search has an unparalleled power and immerses us in many of the strongest emotions we will experience in our entire lives. This often humorous, often poignant, and always profound video explores the differences in the ways that men and women experience the love relationship. It goes beyond mere analysis and examines ways to make a relationship work better for both men and women. Some potential problems reflect important gender differences and needs, while others involve gendered expectations about the love relationship itself. The video features men and women from a variety of cultural and social backgrounds who provide eloquent -- and sometimes rueful -- testimony on how gender differences affect love, courtship, ""couplehood,"" marriage, emotions, understanding, and sensitivity. In powerful and revealing interviews, they discuss what women believe is the most important thing a man needs to know about women, and what men believe is the most important thing a woman needs to know about men.The video begins in infancy, with the ways society constructs boys and girls with gendered ideas about who we are, what is important about us, and what we need. It goes on to illustrate how the differential treatment of boys and girls ensures that they will bring to a love relationship different gifts, needs, and goals. Our search for love relationships is also influenced by deep-seated ideas about how women and men ""should"" behave in courtship, love, and marriage. The video examines this socialization process by looking at ""etiquette"" guidelines for women and men. One hilarious scene follows a young woman as she tries to use the advice she has read on how to attract a man -- but with dubious results. The video also explores how women and men detect ""attraction signals."" These are subtle, fleeting, critical nonverbal cues that can lead to a relationship -- but only if they are detected and accurately interpreted. Verbal communication is also examined, especially the presumed goals of conversation. The video demonstrates how gender differences can lead one partner to regard a conversation as enjoyable, while the other person sees the very same exchange as confusing, enigmatic, or even irritating. In powerful sequences, children give their views on love and relationships and adults describe lost loves and their devastating impact on their lives. One extraordinary young woman confesses that she has created -- after an important relationship has failed -- a series of secret ""tests"" to determine quickly if any man she meets is even capable of deeply caring for her needs. The video also introduces non-traditional couples, considers evolving meanings of ""marriage,"" ""family,"" and ""parent,"" and reveals the anguish and problems caused by the denial to non-traditional couples of the rights and privileges routinely given to traditional couples. There is a consistency, power, and persuasiveness in these revelations, and all viewers of ""Gender and Relationships"" will emerge with an enhanced understanding of what women and men bring to a love relationship, and -- just as important -- what they need to get from it.This work is destined to become a classic and a ""must-see"" for students in many disciplines, including psychology, sociology, women's and gender studies, communication, nonverbal behavior, anthropology, and many others. Filmed over a four-year period in Columbus, Ohio, ""Flag Wars"" explores with eye-opening candor and unforgettable poignancy the effects on a long-established black neighborhood when gay white professionals move into and begin to transform the area. The film unfolds as a narrative drama with multiple storylines and memorable characters. There is Nina, a lesbian realtor who lives and works in the neighborhood and is at the center of the changes taking place. The changes include the designation of areas of the neighborhood as a Historic District (creating restrictive housing codes), an increase in code enforcement complaints, and efforts to reduce low-income housing in the community. Code enforcement is complaint-driven and seems to target long-time residents like Linda, who believes the new gay residents moving in on her block are responsible for the code and zoning citations that have landed her in Judge Pfeiffer's Environmental Court. Linda suffers from cirrhosis of the liver and lives on miniscule disability payments. She refuses to address the zoning violations and her limited resources prevent her from making repairs to her home. This puts her in jeopardy of arrest. Baba, a black Yoruba priest and plumber, is the founder of the neighborhood community gallery, which occupies the bottom two floors of his three-story house. The sign with his name and address that he hangs above his porch is now in violation of Historic (i.e., Victorian) Code because it is carved in an African-relief style. In each case, the power and subtlety of cultural differences are explored and illustrated. As the video demonstrates, culture can be like a veil that prevents us from understanding those from other societies, and also prevents them from understanding us.While some aspects of ""culture shock"" are predictable, such as language differences, many powerful differences are less obvious, and perhaps therefore even more ""culture shocking."" Examples include dramatic differences in personal space, patterns of touching, etiquette and ritual, the expression of emotions, ideas about edible and delicious food, gestures, courtship patterns, and parent-child relationships.A World of Differences: Understanding Cross-Cultural Communication was produced by and features Prof. Dane Archer, of UC Santa Cruz. Like his other widely acclaimed videos, this one is both richly instructional and keenly enjoyable. This is essential viewing in a variety of courses. Viewers will be rewarded with a greatly enhanced awareness of the importance and nature of cultural differences.","stream","[]","[]","['Intercultural communication', 'Communication', 'Nonverbal communication']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007601xxx/1007601977/1007601977-disc001-file001-frame00025-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3190351" "asp3190349-marc","","Uranium. Educator Richard Lavoie draws on decades of teaching experience to demonstrate six basic motivational styles and strategies for inspiring the most withdrawn and reluctant student. In this lively workshop presentation for parents and teachers, based on his recent books The Motivation Breakthrough: Six Secrets to Turning on the Tuned-Out Child, Lavoie touches all the bases. He explains how to tap into an apathetic or learning-disabled student's secret need for prestige, power, praise, or reward. Some strategies are simple -- using clearer, more precise language -- while others take time, patience, and planning. Each one is well worth the effort. With unprecedented access inside both plants, NOVA speaks with workers who were there during the harrowing days of a crisis that began as a natural disaster but was made worse by human beings. But why did the worst happen at one plant, and another that faced nearly identical challenges emerged unscathed? It may come down to the skill and knowledge of one man, who has worked there since they started construction. These are crucial questions as the company that runs both plants, TEPCO, tries to clean up an unprecedented radioactive mess.","stream","[]","['Japan']","['Emergency management', 'Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, Japan, 2011', 'Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, Japan, 2011', 'Nuclear power plants']","['Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007482xxx/1007482665/1007482665-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3180490" "asp3180488-marc","","Nova. In 2004, the Dover school board ordered science teachers to read a statement to high school biology students about an alternative to Darwin's theory of evolution called Intelligent Design -- the idea that life is too complex to have evolved naturally and so must have been designed by an intelligent agent. The teachers refused to comply, and both parents and teachers filed a lawsuit in federal court accusing the school board of violating the constitutional separation of church and state. Now, NOVA explores the arguments by lawyers and expert witnesses in riveting detail and provides an eye-opening crash course on questions such as 'What is evolution?' and 'Is Intelligent Design a scientifically valid alternative?' But today, many children are transitioning, too -- with new medical options, and at younger and younger ages. Growing Up Trans takes viewers on an intimate and eye-opening journey inside this new frontier -- where it's now possible for kids who feel they were born in the wrong body to never have to go through the puberty of their biological sex. Told from the perspective of parents, doctors, and most revealing of all, eight transgender kids themselves, ranging in ages from 9 to 19. FRONTLINE takes a powerful look at this new generation, exploring medical possibilities, struggles, and choices transgender kids and their families face today. With extraordinary access to the gender program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, filmmakers Miri Navasky and Karen O'Connor examine the complicated and often controversial treatments now available to gender nonconforming and transgender kids, and explore the deeply personal emotional issues many parents and families face.","stream","[]","['United States']","['Parent and child', 'Sex role', 'Transgender children', 'Transsexualism', Part 3","","29 minutes","['Taste of China']","The contrasting lives of two families -- a traditional four-generation rural family in a Sichuan village and a modern, single-child family in urban Hangzhou -- are viewed through the routines of their daily meals. In the process, the film illustrates how the Chinese family has endured and how it is changing. This is the third film in the classic four-part series, 'A Taste of China,' which remains perhaps the best introduction for Westerners to traditional Chinese culture. In Sichuan, the four generations of the Za family work, cook, and eat together. Attention is focused on the 84-year-old patriarch of the family and his young great-grandson. At the Xu household in Hangzhou, however, the pressures of modern life have affected the attitudes and structure of the family. While his wife works in a nearby factory, Mr. Xu shops in a 'free market' and prepares a fast meal for the family.Interspersed with views of the two families are scenes in which a traditional itinerant storyteller evokes the ancient rhythm of agrarian life and contemporary urban sequences that suggest new patterns of living.","stream","[]","['China']","['Food habits', 'Families', 'Cooking, Chinese', 'Rural families']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007581xxx/1007581852/1007581852-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FOOD;3180355" "asp3180345-food","","Birdsong & coffee.
