Together the three units recognize that to serve the University in achieving its vision as a national model of a responsive, progressive and scholarly public service community with an accomplished record of engaging people and ideas for common good, the human resources function must take a more strategic and proactive role. The enrichment and leadership development sought by the university can only occur through thoughtful planning aimed at creating an organizational infrastructure that supports these efforts. For example, investment in leadership development on campus will be wasted unless there are also leadership opportunities to utilize the newly developed skills. Partnerships that serve, stimulate and shape the University and broader public can only be developed if reward and recognition systems properly acknowledge individual contributions related to this vision. Human Resources, the Office of the Provost, and campus leaders must play a critical role in reinforcing the university’s values throughout the institution: knowledge and continuous learning, diversity and inclusivity, quality and achievement, freedom and responsibility, engagement and support and social awareness and responsibility. This can be done through: 1) selection processes include a preference for individuals who share these values, 2) socialization employees in ways that reinforce these values, and 3) ensuring that policies and practices regarding compensation, performance, promotion, development, etc. are consistent with these values to the fullest extent possible
