Action Priorities—College of Nursing

Seek innovative clinical internships and partnerships for undergraduate and graduate learning

2006: Expand ThedaCare-Clinical Focus Program; seek clinical partners for the proposed graduate clinical nurse leader MSN.

2007: As the healthcare system dramatically decreases the length of patient stays in hospitals, clinical internships are proportionately shrinking. To replace some clinical time, a new Simulation Lab is employing computer manikins to simulate live patient experiences. 

Encourage undergraduate and graduate-level clinical internships in underserved U.S. communities and international sites.

2006: Continue partnerships with LaClinica-Family Medical and Dental Clinic to provide care to migrants; increase clinical opportunities via partnership with Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai, India.

2007: Funding was secured to pilot a community clinical course in India via partnership with Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai, India. Partnerships continued with La Clinica-Family Medical and Dental Clinic to provide care to migrants.

Explore feasibility of collaborative efforts with UW colleges and Wisconsin technical colleges in local and neighboring communities.

2006: Deliver face-to-face AND to BSN program in Lakeshore communities (Manitowoc and Sheboygan) and the 1+2+1 program at Fox Valley and North Central (Wausau); continue partnership with College of Menominee Nation.

2007: The College delivered face-to-face Associate Degree to Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing Program in lakeshore communities (Manitowoc and Sheboygan); continued a partnership with Northcentral Technical College and UW-Marathon County to offer the “Step Ahead” program in Wausau; and continued to work with Fox Valley Technical College to conduct a second pilot program related to an accelerated associate degree in nursing. 

Provide community clinical experiences for all students that build cultural competency and address priorities of Healthy People 2010.

2006: Recognize health disparities of minority populations and the uninsured with the Living Healthy Program, Fox Cities Community Clinic, inner city clinics and Madison Street Clinic.

2007: The College increased sensitivity and cultural competency with diverse people and populations via clinical learning opportunities; and recognized health disparities of minority populations and the uninsured via clinical experiences at the Living Healthy Program and Fox Cities Community Clinic. 

Expand assessment strategies to meet benchmarks of excellence as students progress through curriculum (use of standardized tests).

2006: Continue student guidance and support to ensure outstanding pass rate in the undergraduate NCLEX (licensure exam) and graduate certification exam (advance practice licensure).

2007: The College provided undergraduate student access to national practice exams prior to graduation and continued student guidance and support to ensure outstanding pass rate in the undergraduate NCLEX (licensure exam) and graduate certification exam (advance practice licensure).
