College Report
College of Business
UW Oshkosh College of Business is the only nationally accredited business school in the New North, an 18-county region covering nearly 25 percent of the state. The college has a long history of success: curriculum and instructional staff that meet the rigorous standards for accreditation; commitment to innovation and risk-taking; location in the middle of Fox River Valley — home to thousands of businesses; and a long history of strong relationships with those businesses, which allows for a blending of theory and practice through activities, internships, guest speakers and real-world projects. We also are large enough to offer a variety of majors and services but small enough to know our students.
2006-2007 Highlights
Community
- In order to provide application-oriented learning for its undergraduate students, the College posts more than 800 internships, and each graduating senior has at least 100 hours of professional work experience.
- The College has formed a new venture, the Wisconsin Financial Services Institute (WFSI), to provide educational services to professionals in the financial services and insurance industries. WFSI will offer classroom-based courses and continuing education programs, beginning with the Certified Financial Planner designation for professionals at multiple sites in northeastern Wisconsin.
- On Sept. 12, 2006, the College hosted its first College of Business Networking night, with more than 400 students and 150 business professionals in attendance.
- The UW Oshkosh College of Business Alumni Association honored the 2006 outstanding alumni and emeritus faculty at an alumni dinner in February at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton. The award has been presented to 27 alumni and eight retired faculty members since 1991. The 2006 honorees were Thomas Kell (BBA ’72), former owner of Kell Container and respected community philanthropist; Jamie Pollard (BBA ’87), athletics director for Iowa State University; and Eugene Drzycimski, finance faculty member at the college for 24 years.
Scholarship
- Accounting alum Peter Wick, of Neenah, is one of only 10 nationwide to receive the latest Elijah Watt Sells Award from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). The annual award goes to the 10 individuals earning the highest cumulative scores on the four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination. The top 10 scores were from more than 44,500 taking the exam.
- Panel discussions about innovation and business growth were part of a Celebration of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in October. The College is the first in Wisconsin to offer an entrepreneurship emphasis.
Teaching
- The College continues to measure the quality of its graduating students. For the second consecutive year, its MBA students scored in the top 5 percent on the Educational Testing Service (ETS) graduate business concepts exam. In 2006, the graduating undergraduate students took the ETS business concepts exam and scored in the 86th percentile
Partnership
- After 35 years of offering evening MBA courses at several Green Bay locations, the College established the Regency Center in downtown Green Bay as its permanent home. The College kicked off and completed the renovation of the MBA center, with events to recognize and thank area donors and the Green Bay community for their support. The principal donors were Ameriprise Auto and Home Insurance and Schneider National. Other donors included D.J. and Julie Long; the Procter and Gamble Foundation; the Ron Weyers and Wally Hilliard Freedom Fund; and Tod Zacharias, a 1983 UW Oshkosh alumnus. The center includes three state-of-the-art classrooms, three breakout rooms and a student lounge. The facility allows the College to double the enrollment in the Green Bay market from 150 to 300 MBA students a year.
