The New FYS Program

SSS was lucky enough to get a grant from Great Lakes to fund a special program to help first generation college students be more successful in college. Statics have shown that first generation students are more apt to fall behind because they don't know what to expect and have no one in their family to turn to because no one in their family has recieved a degree. The First Year Scholars program (FYS) is a year-long program that will guide students through their first year in college.

The goal of this new program is to help support and retain students at UW Oshkosh by providing the students with academic advising and guidance, help with finding resources on college that will make them successful, help with reading and understanding STAR Reports and MAPWorks tools and by putting them into a Learning Group which allows the students to work with others in the same situation by being led by an upperclass student.

If you or anyone you know is a freshmen and could benefit from a program like this, please visit the FYS page on the SSS website for contact information and the application. We would love to get the word out so even if you aren't interested or don't qualify, please spread the word about this great program!
