Mentoring Program

Process:In this year-long program, tenured faculty with SoTL research experience will meet monthly with tenure-track faculty participants for dialogue related to scholarly investigation of teaching and learning. Initial, mid-year and final dialogues will be held among all the participants, while monthly dialogues will involve one mentor and two tenure-track participants.

Program Goal: This program will assist tenure-track participants in initiating research related to teaching and learning.

Application Procedure and Timeline:
Tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply to be mentored. To apply, a tenure-track faculty should submit a one-to two-paragraph statement describing his/her interest in SoTL. In addition, s/he should include a one-to-two paragraph statement from a tenured colleague describing how the applicant could benefit from this mentoring program.

Tenured faculty with SoTL experience are invited to submit applications to participate as mentors. To apply to be a mentor, the tenured faculty member should submit a one- to two-paragraph statement describing his/her SoTL experience.

Please include Fall, Interim and Spring schedules with all submissions.

Applications are due Oct. 3 to carrell@uwosh.edu. The SoTL Steering Committee, Initiative Coordinator and Director of Grants and Faculty Development will make the selections by Friday, Oct. 7. The first whole-group dialogue will be held during the week of Oct. 10.

Program Benefits: Mentors and program participants will receive $500 professional materials allowances, which can be used to purchase resources that enhance professional development related to teaching or to support SoTL research.

Program Funding: This SoTL Mentoring Program is made possible by a grant from the UW Office of Professional and Instructional Development.

Call for Proposals: Institutional SoTL Research

UW Oshkosh faculty who are published SoTL scholars are invited to apply for grant monies to design and implement an institutional SoTL project that focuses on at least one of the following identified teaching challenges:

  • Student Writing
  • Student Motivation
  • Student/Faculty Perception Differences
  • Grade Inflation
  • Large Class Size

Suggestions for related institutional research questions provided by faculty at a Faculty College held last year are available on the SoTL Web site: http://www.uwosh.edu/sotl/.

Up to two projects will be selected to receive funding of $1,250. In November, selected faculty will meet with the SoTL Initiative Coordinator (Lori Carrell), the Director of Grants and Faculty Development (Linda Freed), the Director of Institutional Research (Joe Franklin) and the Faculty Development Board Chair (Gary Adams) to plan the projects. IRB approval is required.

The project timeline is:

  • October 2005 - Selection
  • November 2005 - Planning and final approval
  • November to December 2005 - IRB approval
  • January to May 2006 - Data collection
  • Summer 2006 - Data analysis and written report completed
  • September 2006 - Public presentation and written report disseminated to the campus teaching and learning community.

Applications are due Monday, October 17, to carrell@uwosh.edu and should include the following:

  • Description of the applicant’s previous SoTL work.
  • General idea for the institutional study (1 to 2 paragraphs, including research questions and potential methodology.

Strategic Directions

#1 Active and Civic Learning Through UW Oshkosh General Education Program

  • The SoTL Initiative is sponsoring a regional conference entitled "Teaching and Learning Challenges in General Education" on October 22 nd , 2004, with grant monies received from the UW System Office of Professional Instructional Development.

#19 Faculty Compact

  • The SoTL Initiative continues into its second year based on Faculty Compact funding.

#23 Facilities Master Plan

  • The relocation and remodeling of Dempsey space to include a "Teaching Resource Center" as part of the SoTL Initiative will be part of the Facilities Master Plan.

Distinctiveness

It is in the area of "Distinctiveness" that the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Initiative can make the most vital contribution to the UW Oshkosh campus community. Already known as an institution committed to undergraduate teaching, our efforts to intensify the level of scholarly reflection regarding teaching and learning will contribute to higher levels of excellence. As project results are published and applied in our classrooms, and regional and national linkages are maintained through the Carnegie affiliation, our reputation for distinctive teaching excellence that emanates from scholarly work will continue to grow.
